Album Review: Veil of Maya – Matriarch

Matriarch by Veil of Maya

#aotd is Matriarch by Veil of Maya. On this album the band play that same kinda groovy-“djent” Deathcore/Metalcore they have become known for. I guess the real talking point of this album is how well the new vocalist fits into the band’s sound. Well honestly I did find his performance lacking, especially when compared to the vocalist which preceded him. This is not because of the whole “omfg cleans in VoM r just gay wtf happened 2 dis band” thing, I just find him inferior to the guy which he pretty much tries to sound exactly like. The clean singing on here is hit and miss, the guy’s voice sounds similar to Spencer from Periphery’s but lacks the sense of spectacle that comes with Spencer’s voice. The melodic parts of this album feel generic at best and have been done better by other bands countless times. Veil of Maya do prove themselves as capable musicians on this album. The drumming performance on here in particular is pretty great and the guitars are heavy and impossible to not bang your head to. I would have preferred a few more stand-out guitar parts over some of the awkward production flourishes in this album. Half the time they add a bit of atmosphere and mood to the song but the other half of the time they are poorly implemented and sound a tad stupid. This album signifies a bumpy transition between vocalists for Veil of Maya and I’m hoping once they get more time to evaluate his strengths and weaknesses they may come out with something better.
