#aotd is 2014’s The Weird and Wonderful Marmozets by Marmozets. Musically, this album lies somewhere within the realms of post-hardcore, math rock and good ol’ rock and roll. If there’s one thing Marmozets nail on this album, it is having fun. Seriously, songs like “Move, Shake, Hide” and “Why Do You Hate Me?” are great examples of super catchy, danceable and in your face punk-rock songs. The use of a female singer also helps the band stand out amongst their peers and they don’t put her voice to waste by any means. Easily the highlight of the album, the vocals are reminiscent of Paramore’s Hayley Williams but they have a rougher, more gutsy edge to them, particularly with some of the straight up screams (sidenote: I hate how so many chick vocalists in pop-punk or punk bands are always compared to Hayley but I’m telling you this comparison is warranted). Despite her rougher edge, I did prefer the singer’s cleaner performances like on the song “Captivate You”. What I didn’t like on songs such as “Captivate You” were the really tacked on “technical” math rock aspects. To me they just didn’t really add anything to the experience and honestly they just kind of hurt the fun, catchy nature of the album. However the biggest flaw of this album is its lack of cohesiveness. The album feels more like a collection of songs than a real complete package, it was hard to identify any reoccurring themes or ideas as each song passed. If you are looking for some fun jams with a wicked female lead then give this album a spin but don’t feel inclined to listen to it from start to finish.
