Album Review: The Ongoing Concept – Handmade

Handmade by The Ongoing Concept

#aotd is Handmade by The Ongoing Concept. Musically, this album blends aspects of Post-Hardcore and Metalcore with some Pop and straight up Rock n’ Roll. Right from the get go the band establishes a quick tempo this does not relent until the album is over. This definitely works in the albums favour as it doesn’t stilt its energy with the seemingly compulsory “slow song”. Even the random folkish song on here, “Melody”, maintains the tempo, the band sets a blistering pace and sticks with it. That is one of the few things the band does stick with as the sound of this album is all over the place. I mean, it has that post-hardcore backbone with the hectic guitars and screamed vocals but from the poppy “Amends” to the groovy “Feel” and even the aforementioned folky “Melody” this album does not settle for a singular sound. What is consistent throughout is the sense of cheesiness and unfiltered fun which comes through the over-theatrical vibe the band shoot for at all times. The main vocalist of the band has a wonderful singing voice and really suits the poppier songs. Sounding like a mix between Caleb Shomo of Beartooth and Shawn Mendes, he does a great job for the most part but the screams on here can sound overly goofy at times. Also the production here can sometimes sound overly compressed and undersell the theatricality and balls to the wall sound of the album. Maybe the biggest issue of this album though, is some of the more forgettable tracks on its back end like “Soul”. When an album is only 30 minutes long, these kinds of tracks are a more noticeable issue, there isn’t a straight up bad song on here just some that aren’t as impressive as others. If you’re looking for a fun and quick post-hardcore album with a tonne of personality than look no further, just keep in mind you have to take this album for what it is, warts and all.
