Album Review: Courtney Barnett – Sometimes I Sit and Think, Sometimes I Just Sit

Sometimes I Sit and Think, Sometimes I just Sit by Courtney Barnett

#aotd is Sometimes I Sit and Think, Sometimes I just Sit by Courtney Barnett. On this album Courtney and her band play a grungey kind of Indie-Rock with the lyrical stylings of a singer-songwriter album. Instrumentally, the songs switch from grungier straight up rock songs with quick and punchy guitars to slower, more melancholy slower songs which implement acoustic instruments and more drawn-out guitar work. The highlight of this album is easily Courtney’s lyrics and her personality which radiates from them. Courtney sings about many day-to-day situations and struggles and does a great job of painting a clear picture of her scenarios for the listener. She uses the scenarios in her songs to touch on much deeper and broader issues such as our place and impact on the planet. Her voice may be initially off-putting on the first few listens but it becomes more enjoyable the more you hear it until finally you won’t want it any other way. Unfortunately, some of the longer and slower songs on the album can drag on for too long and don’t highlight Courtney’s excellent lyricism as well as her shorter songs. If you enjoy well-written and easy to relate to music there is no way you shouldn’t at least give this album a chance.
